Ask for referrals when hiring someone to install your HVAC system. Someone may seem like they know what they are doing, but you cannot simply take their word for it. You should be able to call past customers to get an idea of what to expect from this particular installer.

What do you need done? Know this before calling a contractor. A contractor will not be able to give you an accurate price without accurate information about your system. You need to know how to describe any issues. So, have this information ready.

Clean the debris from outside units often. After a wind or rain storm things may pile up, causing problems with your system. It can cause your system to malfunction by overheating.

Do you hear a clicking sound when your fan is turning? This may mean that there is something in the way of the blades of the fan. If it gets so bad that the blade bends, you must replace it, just unbending it will leave the fan unbalanced and can cause further issues.

Having a programmable thermostat installed is a money saving idea. Programmable thermostats can reduce your power HVAC energy costs by as much as ten percent, just by dialing back your thermostat ten or fifteen percent up to eight daily hours. Furthermore, there are a few programmable thermostats that you can control from your computer or any other web-connected device.

If you have a window air conditioner without a timer, use a regular outlet timer to control when it is on or off. These are the same ones you use for holiday lights, so all you have to do is plug your air conditioner into the timer and set it to cool you during the day.

Problems with an air conditioning unit happen when it ices up. The drain line can freeze, making you think it's a plumbing leak. If this is something you notice, switch the thermostat in your home to fan only so the compressor is disabled. If the issue persists, call in help.

Consider an annual service agreement for technicians to regularly inspect your AC unit. Schedule brief inspections for the winter to make sure nothing is obviously wrong. The most important time for an inspection and service is just before it starts getting warm. You don't want to discover an AC breakdown when you need it working most.

Make sure things don't get too hot or cold where your thermostat is. Any electronics or heat sources like lamps or televisions nearby can trick the thermostat into thinking the home is warmer than it actually is. This just means it runs your air conditioning longer than necessary, wasting energy and money.

You should be able to implement these suggestions into your maintenance of your HVAC. It is really hard to learn about this without trying the above tips first, so keep that in mind. Go ahead and get started and you're sure to do a great job.
